·Counseling For Toads -

In this rather miserable(悲惨的) frame of mind, he found himself walking up the drive(车道) to Toad Hall.

Toad Hall was impressive(雄伟的), there were no two ways about it.

It had recently been described in a

glossy(用亮光纸印刷的) county(都)

magazine(杂志) as ‘A gentleman's residence(宅第), benefiting from a secluded(与世隔绝的) position on the bank

of the river, enjoying expansive(广阔的) views across the Wild Wood(原始林) and beyond.

All this is surrounded by extensive(广阔的) and mature(成熟的) gardens with outlying(远离城销的)paddocks(设有围栏的土地) and other buildings.' No wonder Toad

was so proud of it.But as Mole walked up the long drive,he was shocked(震惊的) to see how

everything seemed run down.

The hedges(树丽) were untrimmed(未修勢的) and the rose-beds(玫瑰花坛) were full of weeds(杂草). The lawns(草坪) were covered in leaves and the whole place looked unkempt(凌乱的) and uncared for.

Even the Hall itself looked grim(阴森的) and forbidding(令人生畏的).The white paint, which used to sparkle(闪w) in the sun, was dull(暗淡的)and flaking(剥落的).

The creepers(髭莎) and climbing(攀線而上的) roses, which brought such colour and vibrancy(活力) to the walls, were dying and hanging down like black ropes(绳索).The windows, always clear and shiny(发亮的), seemed only to reflect the dark and

brooding(阴森的) weather and added to the atmosphere(气京) of grim foreboding(凶兆).Mole shivered(栗).

Pressing the buzzer(门t he heard the bell(特声) ringing deep within the house.

There was no answer and so he pressed a second time. Again the bell rang loudly, but to no avail.

Oh well,' thought Mole, 'I might have guessed that Toad would be out enjoying himself. He's probably at his club playing billiards(桌球)

This was a game at which Toad was particularly adept(擅长的).

Reluctant(不情愿的) to leave, Mole walked around the house past the walled kitchen garden(家庭菜园) and came to the back door(后门).

He looked through the kitchen window to see what might be there. The room was empty, although there was some

evidence that the stove(火炉) was

alight(燃烧的).

He knew this room well, for it was

furnished(被布置)with comfortable(舒服的)old chairs in which he and Toad had sat

and enjoyed many a hot mug(大杯) of coffee on a winter's day.

And then he saw on a chair, a large heap of old clothes. Suddenly, the clothes started to move! Mole, being a timid(胆小的) creature, was about to run

off into the garden when the clothes fell away to reveal(使监露)..Toad!

Mole tugged(用力拉) at the back door and was surprised to find that it opened. Inside was the saddest Toad he had ever

seen. Toad's eyes, always large, were now hooded(眼皮半垂的)and dull.

His cricket(板球) sweater(毛衣), which he invariably wore around the house, was covered in food stains(污湾). And his plus-fours(灯笼裤),usually immaculate(整

洁的 and worn at just the right length, had the appearance(外爱) of a couple of potato(马铃薯) sacks(麻袋 hanging from

his waist(腰).

Hello,' said Toad. 'Sorry about the

mess(杂乱),but I'm not feeling too bright

at the moment.' And with that, he burst

into tears.

Chapter 2

With friends like these...

As Mole walked back from Toad Hall later that day, his mind was in turmoil(

乱).How could Toad, that exciting and excitable(易邀动的) animal, have got himself into such a sorry state?

Mole recalled(回忆) the many hours he had spent with Toad over the years. No matter what he was doing, Toad was always smartly(时髦地) dressed to the

point of parody(滑稽的模仿)。

Mole especially remembered Toad's

obsession(着速) with large motorcars(汽车)

and how he always dressed the part:

large check(有格子图案的)overcoat(大衣)

and cape(披风)an over-all(整体的) linen 亚

麻布制的) dust-coat(风衣), a matching cap(帽

子) worn back-to-front(前后戴倒地),and

goggles(护目领). And all of this

complemented(与..相配) with a huge

pair() of yellow(黄色的)leather(皮革制的)

gauntlets(长手套).

At the time, Badger had pooh-

poohed(对.不屑一)Toad's appearance,

saying that he looked a guy and that no

respectable animal would be seen dead

with him But Badger was wrong.

Mole thought he looked extremely

dashing(潇洒的) and compared his own rather sombre(m淡的)black smoking-jacket(吸烟服),which he habitually(习惯性地) wore, to Toad's gay(鲜艳的) apparel(衣

着)。

Mole realised that Toad's ill-kempt(不整洁的) appearance represented a serious internal(内心的) change in his spirits.

His previous smart and sometimes

dramatic(夸张的)wardrobe(全部服装)represented and demonstrated(表现) the

élan([法活力) and joie de vivre([法]生活的乐建) of that singular(非凡的) animal.The bounce(蹦助) and swagger(神气十足)were perfectly displayed by loud(招摇的)

tweed(雅花呢)jackets(夹克),ample(肥大的)plus-fours and the whole set off with a pink(粉红色的)Leander Club(利安得俱乐部)

bow-tie(媒形领结).

So what did it signify(表明) about Toad's emotional(情感的) state that he was unwashed and ungroomed(邋遢的) and

wearing a sweater stiff with food

droppings? And if Mole dared admit it Toad, who always used a good cologne(古龙香水),was a bit smelly.
